Doss has already posted a personal best of 17:02 at a recent 5K race with the Mountain Lions and looks to establish himself among the top five runners this year in Cross Country. He has had the best summer of training in his young running career. Brandon Perdue returns to Concord for his second season after redshirting indoor and outdoor track. He looks to rebound after having to take time off from training. He posted a solid cross country season for Coach Mike Cox making the varsity post season squad in his first collegiate season. Demi and Donnie Kirk will run Cross Country for the first time in three years as they prepare for this senior year of sprinting for Concord. The pair set several school records last season and Demi captured the W.V.I.A.C. championship for the 100 meter dash and both helped Concord win the 4x100 meter relay at the Conference Meet.

Record Setting Weekend for Sherman Collegiates

Sherman Cross Country and Track and Field alums notched record setting performances over the weekend at the D-II Team Challenge in Geneva Ohio. The 300 meter track at Geneva plus hard training over the winter months usually provides fast times and the their performances did not disappoint.
Demi Kirk, Concord Junior and former Sherman state champion in the 100 meter dash, handled a leg of the Mountain Lion 4x400 meter relay team that posted a school record time of 3:56.11 breaking the four year old Concord school record. Her split time was 59.2 seconds. Additionally the team missed hitting the NCAA provisional mark for the national championship meet by less than one second. She also ran the 60 meter dash finishing in a time of 8.17.
Jacob Doss, current Sherman school record holder at 800 meters, ran a personal best of 2:03.48. It was a very solid early effort for Doss who has had to overcome a knee injury earlier this year. Doss came through 200 meters in 29 seconds and 400 meters in 59 finishing the final half of the race in 1:04. The fact that he has posted a personal best time with farily even splits throughout the race show a level of work ethic racing intelligence that should reap good performances as the season continues.
“I had a good week of practice, but I wasn’t expecting to PR in my first indoor 800 meter race,” Doss noted. When I stepped on the line of my first ever 300 meter track in college I knew I had something to prove!”
Doss may have made his most notable achievement of the season in a meet earlier in the season at Marietta College (Ohio) when he ran both the lead off and anchor legs of the 4x400 relay.
Teammate Donnie Kirk probably explained it best by saying, “Jacob Doss ran the 1st and the last leg of the men’s 4x4, so I’d say he probably worked the hardest out of everyone.”
Donnie Kirk, an eight time state meet medalist for the Tide, posted a time of 8.37 for the 60 meter dash and 27.04 for the 200 meter dash. She posted a split time of 61 seconds in the 4x400 relay for the Concord B team. Posting times this early in the season should spell good news for the athletes as they enter outdoor season in the spring.
“We’ve had two track meets since getting back from break,”Donnie Kirk explained. They were both good considering everyone had been off for a month.
I PR’d in the 60 hurdles and the 60 meter dash so I was really happy. . . It has just been a really good season so far, and everyone is excited for outdoor to start.”
Concord’s Track and Field team will be back in action on February 15th at the Rector Field House at Virginia Tech.

Tide Alums Shine at the Collegiate Level in Season Opener

Sherman alumni runners, class of 2010, ran an amazing meet at the Marietta First Glimpse at Marietta College on Saturday December 1, having a great open to their track year. Demi and Donnie Kirk ran
extremely well racking up major points for their team and representing Sherman High School well at the collegiate level once again.
Donnie Kirk (c/o 2010), an eight time state meet medalist for the Tide Track and Field program ran well by showing her superior athleticism and determination in all of her events.
· 55 meter dash - 7th place out of 23 with a time of 7.63 seconds.
· 200 meter dash - 3rd place out of 29 with a time of 27.33 seconds.
· 55 meter hurdles - 6th place out of 12 with a time of 9.42 seconds.
"The meet went really good. We have been training really hard, taking every practice seriously and not slacking off, all the while keeping smart to avoid injuries," noted Donnie Kirk after the meet. "This meet showed how that hard work has paid off. There were PR's all around the board, and many of us have already qualified for conference (W.V.I.A.C. Championship Meet) so it was a good way to start off the season."
Demi Kirk (c/o 2010), Sherman’s 2009 State Champion in the 100 meter dash, ran great in all of her events too as well.
· 200 meter dash - 2nd place out of 29 with a time of 26.93.
· 400 meter dash - 5th place out of 22 with a time of 1:02.92.
Demi also helped her team get 2nd place out of 7 in the 4x400 with an overall time of 4:04.62.
Demi and Donnie both have a competitive trait about them, constantly trying to beat one another; making themselves that much better. Demi said after
her race "We make every practice like a race." This is typical from siblings, constantly wanting to beat each other. The team now could compare the twins to
current Tide sibling distance runners Zack and Jesse Canaday.
Jacob Doss, Senior of the class 2012 and Sherman school record holder in the 800 meter run, competed in the 400 meter race placing 11th with a time of
55.13 seconds. Doss had a very rough start with his Cross Country season with a knee injury that needed physical therapy. He quickly got back into the game
knowing that he could not let his classmate, Brandon Perdue, get too far ahead of him. As most of us know, Doss will come out strong in a solid track season
after focused and determined winter training.
More alumni updates will be available in the near future.

Tide Cross Country Excels in the Classroom
Earns 3.54 Cumulative Team GPA
November 26, 2012
Sherman's Cross Country program started the school year off very successfully with placing seven runners into the WV State Meet and continued to excel in the classroom by notching an overall team GPA of 3.54 for the first nine weeks. Tide runners Samantha Garretson and Thomas Bowles earned averages of 4.0 or better. The following runners earned grade point averages of 3.0 or better: Zack Canaday, Cameron Jarrell, B.J. Deal, Grant Kellione, Blake Nelson, Nick Carrier, Amelia Sebok, and Nathaniel Selbe.
"I was very pleased and proud when report cards came out," exclaimed Coach Adam Coon. "I would say we have to have one of the highest team averages in the school. Everyone pulled their weight in the classroom. I think it shows that success isn't just earned on the cross country course or on the track."

The Tide capped off a successful cross country season by achieving personal bests team wide at the West Virginia State Cross Country Championships. The
highlight of the meet was Freshman Amelia Sebok's 20th place finish in 21:10.32.
She was the second freshman to cross the line in the A-AA division. Sebok ran as
high as 17th place at points on the course before finishing in the 20th
position. It was a solid day for the 3 event school record holder at Sherman Jr.
High as she capped off a stellar freshman season.
Junior Samantha Garretson finished with a personal record 23:22.73 in 59th place in her first trip to the state meet. Garretson showed extreme toughness by battling hip
and knee pain the last few weeks of the season. Also, two days before the race
she was injured after falling over a fallen tree branch while running. She
suffered a puncture wound to the shin, but was ready to race at her highest level.
"Samantha's toughness the last few weeks has been awesome to watch," said Coach Adam Coon. "She's been kind of an inspiration to the team, especially after getting a stick jabbed into her leg and not missing a single run. To race like she did today was awesome."
The boys’ team finished in the 12th position in the A-AA division. Freshman Zack Canady notched a personal record time of 18:23.70 for 46th place. Canady was the 5th freshman in the small schools division to cross the finish line. Junior Thomas Bowles followed with a time of 18:39.90 in 55th place. Cameron Jarrell, a senior, was the Tide's third man for the day finishing in 88th place with a time of 19:43.40. Jarrell's solid effort earned him a personal best time of 16 second
personal best time including road races. Freshman Blake Nelson continued his stellar first season as a distance runner by setting a near personal record of
two minutes in a time of 19:48.70 and 91st place. Sophomore Nick Carrier had a stellar performance crossing the line in 19:49.10 for 92nd place. Carrier's
result was perhaps the most unexpected and determined of the team as the first year sophomore ran a personal record of nearly two minutes, an unusual feat in
distance running. Additionally it was only his third time in the scoring five in his young career. Nathaniel Selbe capped off a successful freshman campaign with
a 98th place finish in 19:59.40. Senior Grant Kellione finished off his senior campaign with a 112th place finish in a time of 21:34.70.
"Today was a good stepping stone for our program," Coach Coon added. "As anyone can see we are a very, very young team. To win the regional meet in a close race and to perform at our best at the biggest meet under pressure shows good signs for the years to come. Cameron and Grant have done a great job of leading the team as seniors this year."
"It hurt unbelievably bad," noted Junior Thomas Bowles. "But after all the intense training, it was worth it."

It was a historic day for the Sherman Cross Country team as the Sheman boys team claimed its first regional title in program history. Thomas Bowles led the Tide to the finish line with a runner up finish with a time was 19:14. Zack Cannady provided a clutch freshman performance to finish third in 19:17. Bowles and Cannady threw in a strong last kilometer which gave them low scores which provided a huge boost to the Tide's chances in the team standings.

Freshman Blake Nelson continued his fantastic late season charge to finish 16th in 21:01 and Nathaniel Selbe brought home Sherman's scoring with a time of 21:12 and 18th place.
Team scoring was only a guess until the awards ceremony, but Sherman pulled out a two point victory 43-45.
On the girls side the story was just as good. Freshman Amelia Sebok finished as runner up and earned an individual qualifying spot in the State Meet. Her time was 23:02. Samantha Garretson estabilshed a top 10 position in the first half mile and ran a solid race to finish 5th in 25:20. Tide alums Brandon Perdue and Jacob Doss reported to Concord University on August 13th for preseason preparations for the upcoming Cross Country season. During the 2011-2012 year Perdue was an individual State Cross Country Meet qualifier and top 20 finisher at the State Meet. He went on to achieve personal bests of 10:11.44 for 3200 meters, 4:44.20 for 1600 meters, and 2:04.47. He accomplished this in his only year of full time distance running after three years competing mostly in the 400 meters. Doss narrowly missed a state meet berth in Cross Country by finishing 11th in the Region IV Championship meet in 2011, but rebounded to qualify in four events at the WV State Track and Field Meet in 2012. He set personal bests of 4:39.66 for 1600 meters, and a 2:04.44 800 meter run which stands as a school record. He was the leadoff leg of the 4x800 meter relay team at the WV State Track and Field Championships.
"Brandon and Jacob were complete team leaders, with both their performances and their leading of the team," said Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Adam Coon, "I think the team looked up to them, and they definitely brought more runners into the program taking on a higher level of
training. They left the program better than they found it."
Concord Head Coach Mike Cox added, "I'm very excited to have these two young men join us here. I think they can make an impact right away and in the future."
